What is RSO Oil and How is it Used?

Rick Simpson Oil, better known as RSO, is one of the most potent products on any legal cannabis menu — and one of the most misunderstood. If you have heard about it in the context of chronic pain, cancer symptom management, sleep, or appetite, you are probably wondering what it actually is, how to dose it safely, and where to buy a lab-tested version in New York. This guide covers all of that, and shows you what NY Elite Cannabis carries at our Bayside, Queens dispensary.

What Is RSO?

RSO is a whole-plant cannabis extract developed in the early 2000s by Rick Simpson, a Canadian engineer and cancer patient. It is a thick, dark, syrup-like oil made by soaking cannabis flower in a food-grade solvent such as ethanol, then evaporating the solvent off until only a concentrated resin remains. Because it is a full-spectrum extract, RSO preserves the plant's cannabinoids (mostly THC, with meaningful CBD, CBG, and CBN), its terpene profile, and its flavonoids — not just an isolated compound. That whole-plant profile is what people mean when they talk about the "entourage effect."

Modern licensed RSO is not homemade. In New York, every syringe or capsule you buy at a licensed dispensary is produced in a licensed processor's lab, tested for potency and contaminants (pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvent, microbials), and labeled with a Certificate of Analysis. That matters, because RSO is so concentrated that even a small amount of contamination becomes concentrated too.

What People Use RSO For

RSO is most commonly reached for in four situations. This is not medical advice — if you are managing a serious condition, talk to a physician or a pharmacist familiar with cannabis, and start with the smallest possible dose.

  • Persistent pain that has not responded well to lower-potency products. RSO's very high THC content makes it useful when a small volume of medicine has to do a lot of work.
  • Cancer symptom management — nausea, appetite loss, sleep disruption, and pain related to treatment. Scientific evidence for RSO treating cancer itself is limited and ongoing; scientific evidence for RSO helping patients tolerate treatment is stronger and grows every year.
  • Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, and certain movement disorders. Some patients report meaningful relief; results are individual and should be tracked with your clinician.
  • Sleep and appetite. A very small dose taken about an hour before bed is a common protocol; larger daytime doses can meaningfully increase appetite.

How to Dose RSO Safely

RSO is much stronger than the same volume of a tincture or an edible. A common starting protocol — sometimes called the "grain of rice" method — is a dose about half the size of a grain of rice, taken orally, up to three times per day. That is a starting point, not a target. You should stay at that dose for several days before increasing, because the effect of an oral dose can take 60 to 120 minutes to arrive and then last for 4 to 8 hours.

Because RSO is so potent, edge cases matter. If you have never used cannabis before, RSO is not the product to start with — begin with a low-dose gummy or tincture and build tolerance first. If you take other medications, especially blood thinners, sedatives, or anti-seizure medications, ask a pharmacist about interactions. And plan around your day: a full RSO dose is not something to take before driving or working.

How to Use It

Every RSO product NY Elite carries can be used more than one way:

  • Oral (sublingual or swallowed). Squeeze a rice-grain dose from the syringe onto a piece of bread, a spoonful of yogurt, or directly under the tongue. Sublingual absorption is faster; swallowing takes longer but lasts longer.
  • Capsules. Pre-dosed, tasteless, and easy to travel with. Good for people who dislike the flavor of raw RSO.
  • Topical. A pea-sized amount can be rubbed directly onto sore joints, muscle knots, or targeted skin areas. Topical use does not produce a head high — the cannabinoids act locally.
  • In food and drinks. Mix RSO into a warm (not hot) drink, honey, or a fatty food like nut butter to improve absorption. Do not heat above 300°F, or you will start burning off the cannabinoids you paid for.

What NY Elite Cannabis Carries

NY Elite carries lab-tested RSO from licensed New York processors, in both syringe format (for people who want to dial their own doses) and pre-filled capsule format (for consistency and convenience). Because RSO supply from licensed NY processors is limited compared to flower or vapes, our specific brands rotate — check the live tinctures menu or ask your budtender for the current stock. If we do not have exactly what you need on hand, we can usually flag when a restock is coming in.

All RSO purchases are covered by our same-day delivery across Queens, Nassau, and the Rockaways — enter your ZIP code to see your zone. In-store, our team is trained to walk first-time RSO users through dosing and can help you match a product to your goals.
